MAINA: Sack AGF now, lawyers group tells Buhari

MAINA: Sack AGF now, lawyers group tells Buhari

The League of Patriotic lawyers has called for the resignation of the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Mallam Malami Abubakar over the reinstatement of former Chairman of Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina.

Briefing newsmen yesterday, Chairman of the group, Mr. Abubakar Yesufu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue the anti – corruption crusade by showing the AGF the door.
President Muhammadu Buhari signing a document
His words: ”The league wonders why it took this long for the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to name and shame the beneficiaries of pension scam. As the chief law officer of the federation, Malami owes us a duty to reveal the list of this pension scam. For refusing to reveal the beneficiaries of this humongous crime against our helpless pensioners, the Honourable Attorney General has not done well.
“Not the reference to Goodluck Jonathan’s complicity which is doubtful nor a reference to a “Lagos Lawyer” who purchased a property validly can assuage our call for the resignation of the Attorney General. Failing to resign, the league advised the President to give him the boot without wasting time.”

Buhari sympathises with Oyegun over Atiku’s resignation

Buhari Sympathises With Oyegun Over Atiku's Resignation.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday jokingly sympathised with the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over the resignation of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar from the party.
President Buhari in an unusual disposition while inaugurating a 30-member panel on National Minimum Wage, told Oyegun, “accept my sympathy for losing a senior member of your party,” in an apparent reference to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who last week announced his decision to resign from the APC.
President Buhari was not forthcoming in mentioning the name of the senior member of the party that resigned, it was apparent that he was referring to the former Vice President who was the latest senior member of the APC to have dumped the party.
Atiku last week took the party by surprise as he announced that he was quitting the party for its alleged failure to fulfil its promises to Nigerians.
Also, during a photo session with members of the panel shortly after the inauguration, President Buhari threw another banter, this time at the governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.
He jokingly asked the governor why he was not “properly dressed” unlike his Kebbi State counterpart, Atiku Bagudu.
Buhari pointed to the Armed Forces Remembrance emblem on the chest of Bagudu which was missing on Aregbesola’s dress.
The former vice-president was one of those who contested the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2015 general elections and lost to Buhari.

Messi Signs New Barcelona Contract, Set To Become World’s Highest Paid Footballer

Messi Signs New Barcelona Contract, Set To Become World’s Highest Paid Footballer.

After months of speculation, Lionel Messi inked a new contract with FC Barcelona on Saturday morning that commits him to Camp Nou through the 2020-21 season when he is 34-years old.
His previous deal was set to expire at the end of this current season. In July, the club had announced an agreement was in the works, but it took four months for the Argentine superstar to agree to financial terms.
Had Messi not signed, he would have been free to listen to offers from other teams on Jan. 1.Now it seems no other club can afford to go knocking on Barca’s door for him any time soon. With this signing, the club confirmed his new buyout clause is set at $835 million (€700 million), more than double his previous clause ($357 million / €300 million).
According to Spanish paper El Mundo, Messi will receive a $59.6 million signing bonus.
Two Forbes sources say he will earn $667,000 a week. Last season he made $50 million in salary and bonus for his efforts on the pitch. If his entire bonus is paid this season, Messi will gain the top spot on our annual list of The World’s Highest Paid Soccer Players and round out the top three of The World’s Highest Paid Athletes.
Combined with his $30 million in endorsement income, anchored by his lifetime deal with German sportswear giant Adidas and including new deal with Spanish sunglass maker Hawkers for a signature line, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could bank over $130 million by this current campaign’s end.
Among the highest paid in the world, he could be sandwiched between Floyd Mayweather who earned in excess of $200 million and his August 2017 opponent Conor McGregor who earned an estimated $105 million.
Big congrats to Messi 🍾

Nasarawa State University frontgate
The management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, said on Friday that it would not admit more than 4000 new students for the 2017/2018 academic session, even though 30,000 applied for admission.
Prof.Mohammed Mainoma, the Vice Chancellor of the University, made this known when the state House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology paid an oversight visit to the school.
Mainoma, who was represented by the institution’s Registrar, Alhaji Bala Ahmed, commended the assembly for its support in ensuring that the standard of education improved in the institution.
According to him, “on the number of requests by candidates seeking for admission arising from JAMB result released this year; over 30,000 candidates want to be admitted into this university.
“Unfortunately, our carrying capacity cannot absorb that number, as we do not have more than 4000 admission quota.
“This admission quota is not done by the university, but it is from the National Universities Commission (NUC) which determined admission quota of universities.
“This is based on the aggregation of facilities, infrastructure such as classrooms, quality of library and the quality of staffing.
“The university will be queried if we go beyond the admission quota, so we seek for your understanding, candidates and everybody’s understanding in this area.

Astronomers discover exo-planet with 'extraordinarily eccentric orbit'

Astronomers discover exo-planet with 'extraordinarily eccentric orbit'

The discovery of a planet with a highly elliptical orbit around an ancient star could help us understand more about how planetary systems form and evolve over time.
The new planet, HD76920b, is four times the mass of Jupiter, and can be found some 587 light years away in the southern constellation Volans, the Flying Fish.

At its furthest, it orbits almost twice as far from its star as Earth does from the Sun. So how does this fit into the planet formation narrative, and are planets like it common in the cosmos? A gaseous planet, HD76920b will change shape as it swings past its star, stretched by its enormous gravity. Those tides will be far greater than any we experience on Earth.
That tidal interaction will act over time to circularise the planet’s orbit. The point of closest approach to the star will remain unchanged, but the most distant point will gradually be dragged closer in, driving the orbit towards circularity. All of this suggests that HD76920b cannot have occupied its current orbit since its birth. If that were the case, the orbit would have circularised aeons ago.
One thing we do know is the story is coming to a fiery end. In the next few million years, the star will swell, devouring its final planet. Then, HD76920b will be no more.

The Thread: “See who’s talking about corruption” “How many private jets do you have?” | GEJites clap back at Tinubu

The Thread: “See who’s talking about corruption” “How many private jets do you have?” | GEJites clap back at Tinubu.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos state and godfather to our Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, had stinging words for Goodluck Jonathan at a book launch in Aso Rock recently.

He said:

“One minister and her rogues’ gallery picked the pocket of this nation for billions of dollars. While poor at governance, these people could give a master thief lessons in the sleight of hand. In governance, they earned a red card but in corruption, they won the gold medal.”

Ouch. That must have hurt.

Indeed, from these replies by GEJites, it did. But GEJites do not pull punches, they basically reminded Asiwaju that a pot cannot call a kettle black.

See below:

hen a Tinubu can be loud in attacking GEJ on issues of corruption. I began to wonder what has become of us as a country. For someone who converted the whole of Lagos to his private enterprise?

Anyway,Jonathan has given him a smart response.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu calling Jonathan government corrupt? Na wa o, it is the dryness of the river that made the tadpole challenge the fish to a fight.

In another season, the river would be full again, then we shall know the true place of the tadpole

— Jude C. Ndukwe (@stjudendukwe) November 17, 2017

Tinubu’s comment on GEJ, corruption..

GEJ was a president. Tinubu was a governor. GEJ has no private jet. How many does Tinubu have?

— Babasola Kuti (@SKSolaKuti) November 17, 2017

It baffles me how the youth keeps on defending these corrupt politicians. GEJ is corrupt as much as Tinubu is much more corrupt. #LetsCallAspadeAspade@GEJonathan@AsiwajuTinubu

Iwobi inspires Eagles' win against 'Messi-less' Argentina

Iwobi inspires Eagles' win against 'Messi-less' Argentina.
Alex Iwobi scored twice as Nigeria fought back from 2-0 down against an Argentina side missing Lionel Messi to secure a stunning 4-2 friendly victory in Krasnodar.
Having drawn level with Hernan Crespo by scoring a late winner against the Russians, Aguero followed up his first international goal since June 2016 by tapping home Argentina's second to back up Ever Banega's free-kick opener.
Yet their comfortable cushion evaporated either side of the interval, with Kelechi Iheanacho inspiring a Nigeria fightback with a free-kick of his own in the closing stages of the first half.
Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Iwobi and Bryan Idowu swung the game further away from Argentina, with the former then slotting home a fourth to secure Nigeria just their second ever win over their South American opponents.
The astonishing turnaround came after Banega's 28th-minute free-kick gave Sampaoli's side a deserved lead - albeit they needed help from goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to break the deadlock.
After nudging the ball outside his own penalty area, a careless Akpeyi curiously allowed Aguero to quickly close the gap, forcing him to pick it up to prevent embarrassment.
He did not escape punishment for his error, however, as Banega curled the resulting set-piece opportunity into the net, Akpeyi opening up further space to target by taking an unnecessary step behind his wall.
Aguero added a second eight minutes later to move clear of Crespo, the striker tapping home Cristian Pavon's low cross from the right, and at that stage Argentina were coasting.
Nigeria had barely threatened in the first half but still managed to get back in the game, Iheanacho following Banega's example by scoring from a free-kick in the final minute of the first half.
FT: Argentina 2-4 Nigeria.
We turned around a 2 goal deficit to beat Argentina.
The Leicester City striker's effort came after he had earlier left an impression on Nicolas Otamendi, catching his former Manchester City team-mate with an elbow.
Yet Iheanacho escaped with only a yellow card and, after halving the deficit, he heaped further pain on Argentina by setting up Nigeria's quick-fire double after the break.
After providing the square pass from the right that allowed Iwobi to sweep home an equaliser, the 21-year-old forward played in Idowu to curl a right-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.
Hit by a one-two combination, Argentina struggled to mount a response as they looked to get back on level terms in a game that had somehow escaped from their grasp.
With no Messi to inspire any late heroics, Iwobi wrapped up the victory for Nigeria, the Arsenal forward finishing with his left foot after swerving his way beyond Javier Mascherano.

How I Turned Ex-president Obasanjo Into Comic Actor – Spiff

How I Turned Ex-president Obasanjo Into Comic Actor – Spiffy.

In as much as former President Olusegun Obasanjo is known as being humorous, not just a few were surprised when Samuel Ajibade, popularly known as Spiff, featured OBJ on his comedy skit titled ‘Dele Issues.’ In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor explained how he was able to ‘steal’ some time from the former president’s busy schedule to feature him on his comic skit.

“It took the grace of God for me to be able to feature OBJ on ‘Dele Issues.’ It did not really take much time before I got him to appear on the show. When God wants to bless you, it happens all of a sudden and before you know it, things work out very fast and you would be wowed.
“It was something that happened based on the relationship my management had with people at the youth development centre of the President Olusegun Obansanjo’s library. They wanted to do the 2017 youth dialogue programme and the ex-president was billed to be one of the special guests that day. Immediately I was called to host the event, the idea struck me and I told my management about it. I told them that I wanted to use my talent as my contribution to the awareness of the youths in this country today especially looking at the trend of youths emerging as presidents of other countries around the world. Nigerians are smart and intelligent people and I believe that we can do better.
“After discussing with my management and they approved of it, I planned everything and even though I prayed for the best, I also expected the worst. If it happened, fine and if otherwise, I would have embraced it as well. When we met with the ex-president, he loved the idea and we did the skit and he left. I was prepared for that episode, I was on standby and I knew where he was going to sit down, so I waited for him there with the script. When he arrived and bought into the idea and asked if that was everything, I was surprised at the question but replied in the affirmative. He then asked if he could infuse some things to the script and I obliged him.”
Ajibola said that he believed the ex-president would make a good actor because it took them less than five minutes and just one take to get the job done.
“We did the episode with only one take and it took us less than five minutes. I was surprised with the result because I have met actors that do rehearsals for a long time but when it is time to execute the job, they would still make mistakes. I am not saying it is an easy task but some people are more blessed than others. We all know that Baba has a humorous personality and people have always wanted to see that. I am happy I was the one that showed it to them. It was a privilege. There were things he said that I had to bite my lips to avoid laughing while we were shooting. I must confess that I was surprised and awed while I was in his presence but I maintained my composure. It was something that happened spontaneously. Although I encountered some loss while doing the skit, I am glad that I took up the challenge. I planned to shoot it the day I rented the equipment but things did not work out as planned, I prayed it happened and it did the next day,” the actor said.

In the report, which was published on Tuesday (October 31), the World Bank recognised Nigeria as one of the top 10 most improved economies with the country moving up 24 places to the 154th position in the ease of doing business ranking.
Several government officials including President Muhammadu Buhari were delighted by the report, which the President said acknowledged the efforts of his administration to create a better environment for businesses and investment.

Russia company to build nuclear power plants in Nigeria

Russia company to build nuclear power plants in Nigeria

Russia has signed a deal to build two nuclear power plants in Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy seeks to end its energy crisis. Russian state-owned company Rosatom will build one in the south, the other in the centre, sources at the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission told the BBC.
The deal's exact worth is unknown, although some reports suggest it is likely in the region of $20bn (£15bn). It is one of a number that Rosatom has been eyeing on the continent.
Africa Live updates.
Can Africa lead the way on renewable energy?
The company is also involved in discussions in Ghana and South Africa. An initial agreement with the latter to build a plant was ruled unlawful in a South African court earlier this year. The deal in Nigeria was reached after a long period of negotiation, with the two countries signing their first intergovernmental nuclear co-operation agreement in 2009.
Nigeria hopes the plants, which will initially be operated by Rosatom before they are handed over, will help deal with the country's energy deficit. According to World Bank figures, more than 40% of the country was without mains electricity in 2014.
Nigeria is one of Africa's largest oil producers, but much of its oil wealth has been squandered over the years.
Corruption at all levels has left the country out of pocket , and producing a fraction of the energy its 180 million citizens need. Construction of the new power plants is expected to begin in the next two years.

A Flying Predator The Size of a Plane Could Have Been The Largest of Its Kind

A Flying Predator The Size of a Plane Could Have Been The Largest of Its Kind

The remains of an ancient flying predator that ruled the skies some 70 million years ago have been discovered in Mongolia, and researchers say the species likely ranked among the largest of its kind.
The fossil discovered belongs to a kind of pterosaur – a group of flying reptiles that lived around the same time as dinosaurs. These animals were the first vertebrates known to evolve the power of flight, and are thought to be the largest flying animals ever seen on Earth.
The pterosaur species unearthed in Mongolia has not yet been identified, but based on the size of the fragments of cervical vertebrae (neck bones) found, this sucker was huge. While it's hard to estimate the size of an extinct pterosaur solely from chunks of neck, the team thinks its footprint would have been comparable to the two largest species we know about: _Quetzalcoatlus_ and _Hatzegopteryx_, which had wingspans up to approximately 11 metres (36 feet).
That puts them, and potentially our Mongolian John Doe, on a par with a small plane – which, frankly, would have been terrifying if you were a small vertebrate being stalked and swooped by these things 70 million years ago.

Costas Takkas, 60, a British citizen, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, U.S. prosecutors said. His lawyer, Gordon Mehler, said he hoped Takkas would serve only about 90 days because he was previously detained in Switzerland while awaiting extradition to the United States.
Takkas was the attaché to Jeffrey Webb, a former FIFA vice president and president of CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, according to prosecutors.
Webb pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and other charges in November 2015. He has not yet been sentenced.
Takkas was among more than 40 people and entities charged in a U.S. investigation of the payment of more than $200 million of bribes and kickbacks to soccer officials, in exchange for marketing and broadcast rights.
Prosecutors said Takkas received and transmitted millions of dollars in bribes for Webb, including for the awarding of rights to qualifier matches for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Takkas pleaded guilty in May. Mehler said at the time that Takkas was a “minor figure in a major case.”
Takkas’s sentencing came about a week after Hector Trujillo, a former judge from Guatemala, became the first person sentenced in the criminal case. Chen sentenced Trujillo, who was accused of taking kickbacks from a marketing company in exchange for his help securing media and marketing rights for World Cup qualifying matches, to eight months.

Nigerians consumption of 400 million condoms yearly, falls below expectation – SFH

Nigerians consumption of 400 million condoms yearly, falls below expectation – SFH

EEWO! NIGERIANS CONSUME THESE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF CONDOMS YEARLY (SEE DETAILS)

The Society for Family Health has said the estimated number of condoms consumed by Nigerians annually is 400million.
The Managing Director, Bright Ekweremadu said this in Lagos on Tuesday.
Ekweremadu however said the amount is still low considering the population of the country and expressed concerns over the number of unprotected sex that is still rampant in the society.
He said, “We have been in the business of condom production for over 30 years. We have done a lot of things in educating people to embrace abstinence with our zip-up campaign. There are obviously sexually active Nigerians who may not totally abstain from sex and this led to our alternative, particularly at this time when HIV/AIDs is prevalent in the country.
”What we are doing now is expanding choices for the sexually active Nigerians who are using condoms. So we have varieties of condoms with different features to make sex worth it, for those who will use the condom. We are not promoting sex. What we are promoting is responsible sex. If you know you cannot abstain, the best thing is to use condom; it’s safe for you and your partner.”
