2018 UTME is around the corner but Kano candidates are not coming out to register for the upcoming examinations.

2018 UTME is around the corner but Kano candidates are not coming out to register for the upcoming examinations.

The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Is-haq O. Oloyede has said that he is worried about the poor turnout of candidates at registration centres in Kano. The Registrar while inspecting some designated Computer Based Test (CBT) centres in the state on Tuesday, December 26, expressed concern over the candidates' attitude towards the UTME registration. »
Oloyede said the Board was accused of giving only one month for registration last year and despite announcing the commencement of the registration exercise since December 6, the candidates are still not coming out for registration. He said, “I want to state categorically that the board will not give any extension after the expiration of February 6, 2018, deadline. So, I am calling on all JAMB candidates, Direct Entry (DE), United Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) and foreign students to come forward and register for the exam, we have started registration on December 6, 2017 and we are closing on February 6, 2018,”
However, the Registrar expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance with which the Computer Based Test Centres owners are carrying out the registration exercise. The Registrar who is the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin said, ''I am happy that CBT centres in Kano are duly following our registration guidelines and processes.”
JAMB to deploy malpractice device for 2018 UTME.  Meanwhile, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) recently said the deployment of the CCTV device during JAMB examinations had come to stay to tackle examination malpractice.

Ronaldo trails Messi after mimicking celebration

Ronaldo trails Messi after mimicking celebration
The defining image of the previous “Clasico ’’ in the league last April was the sight of Lionel Messi defiantly showing the back of his shirt to the baying Real Madrid crowd .
This was after burying the winning goal to settle a thrilling contest 3 - 2 for FC Barcelona .
The goal , also the Argentine ’s 500th strike for his club , proved futile in Barca’s pursuit of Madrid .
Real Madrid still won a first La Liga crown in five years , but the incident has had a surprising knock on effect on the current campaign .
Cristiano Ronaldo, locked in a compelling battle with Messi for the title of being the best player in the world , replicated Messi ’s celebration four months.
That was when he scored for Real against Barca in the Nou Camp in the Spanish Super Cup , but his actions had unintended consequences .
Ronaldo incurred an automatic booking for removing his shirt to celebrate the goal in Real ’s 3 - 1 win .
Two minutes later he was sent off for a second yellow card , this time for diving.
Incredulous at the decision, he pushed referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea and was subsequently slapped with a five- game ban , missing Real’s opening four Liga games .
By the time Ronaldo made his first league appearance of the season in an eventual 1 - 0 defeat by Real Betis on Sept . 20, Messi was already on a remarkable nine goals .
Real Madrid were seven points adrift of Barca at that stage .
The champions host their bitter rivals on Saturday sitting fourth in the Liga standings , 11 points behind Barca, although they have a game in hand .
No side has ever won the Liga after falling eight points behind the leaders .
Not helped by his lack of match practice, Ronaldo did not open his account in the league until his fourth league game, striking the winner against Getafe.
His second goal did not come until his ninth appearance , against Malaga.
His two goals in the last league outing against Sevilla took him to four for the season, his worst campaign so far in nine years in Spain.
Twenty - one players have scored more than the usually prolific Portuguese in Spain’s top flight this season, with Messi leading the way with 14 goals .
Ronaldo has compensated for his poor domestic form by maintaining his usual high standards in international competitions .
He is the top scorer in this season’s UEFA Champions League with nine goals .
Last weekend he struck the only goal in the Club World Cup final against Gremio to help Real sign off 2017 with a club record five trophies .
His floundering league displays have not affected his self - confidence, either.
“ There is not a more complete player than me and I believe I am the best player in the history of football , in the good and the bad moments,” Ronaldo said this month after winning the Ballon d‘Or.
The win ensured he is now level with Messi in being named world player of the year a record fifth time.
With five goals in his last four games in all competitions , Ronaldo heads into the ‘Clasico ’ in prolific form.
It will be no big surprise if he inspired Madrid to victory over Barca.
But even if he does, Real will still face a huge task in chasing down the Catalans .
They had marched into an early lead while Ronaldo was shackled by his ban, partly due to mimicking Messi ’s iconic celebration.

Fuel scarcity: Commuters stranded, fares rise

Fuel scarcity: Commuters stranded, fares rise

Commuters, motorists and other users of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) faced tougher conditions on Tuesday as the latest round of fuel scarcity in the country got worse , with its attendant negative impacts on transportation and businesses .
Some frustrated Nigerians narrated to our correspondents their ordeals while trying to get petrol at the few filling stations that were selling the product in Lagos, Ogun, Abuja and Owerri.
Our correspondent who visited the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation depot in Ejigbo, Lagos, learnt that only 28 tankers loaded PMS on Tuesday, down from between 40 and 50 tankers daily before the scarcity began, while many private depots in Apapa were still without the product.
Commuters were seen at many bus - stops struggling to get commercial vehicles to different destinations, even as transport operators increased the fares by as much as 100 per cent on most routes.
The long queues of desperate motorists at some filling stations in parts of Lagos spilled onto the roads and caused gridlock, making commuters to suffer more pain.
A commercial vehicle driver, Mr . Obinna Jonathan , said , “We don’t know where this country is heading to because we experience fuel scarcity every year, especially in December . Since morning , I have been looking for fuel . Even yesterday (Monday ), I know how I struggled to get N3 ,000 worth of fuel , which I used to convey passengers .
“ It is really affecting my work because as a commercial driver, if I don’t have fuel in my vehicle , I can’t work ; I am not going to put water in the tank. The government should really look into this issue because we are suffering in this country . I am even tired of this country; if I see a way to get out of this country , my brother, I will just vanish from Nigeria. Believe me , we are suffering in this country .”
Another transporter , Mr . Muftau Badmus, who was seen pouring petrol from a jerry can into his tricycle at Cele Bus - Stop , along the Apapa - Oshodi Expressway , said he got to a filling station at around 5 :30 am and did not get fuel until around 2 pm.
“ I have told myself that after using up the fuel I bought today, I won’t come out tomorrow . The government should help us to solve this scarcity because the poor people are the ones suffering now. All the government people are not suffering but we that voted for them are the ones feeling the pain,” he lamented .
With sweat running down her face as she sat in her car waiting at a filling station along Okota Road to get petrol, Mrs . Kate Chukwu did not hide her frustration over the situation in the country.
She said , “ I have been in the queue for over one and half hours just to get fuel . It is really outrageous and frustrating that we even have to pay an extra N200 to get the fuel . It is really bad because now I am supposed to be at home cooking , but I am here waiting to get fuel .
“ Last Sunday , in my church , they said we should pray for our country . But I refused to pray because I know that my prayer cannot solve Nigeria’s problems ; we have a lot of things that are not in order .”
A motorist , Mr. Sunday Isong , said the struggle to get petrol had disrupted his plan to travel to Cross River .
He stated , “ Today, I am very confused and tired ; I have been running up and down the whole day to get fuel . My car stopped at a particular point because of fuel . I started moving up and down with a jerry can, looking for fuel . I was eventually able to buy five litres of fuel for N1 ,200, which I put in the car to enable me to run around to see where I can get more fuel .
“ I don’t know what is happening in this country . In some stations , they are not selling to vehicles but to those with jerry cans so that they can get extra money. The government should quickly do something about this. Our country has crude oil; so I don ’t know what is causing fuel scarcity.”
Mr . Yemi Adewole , who runs a laundry business, alleged that many of the filling stations had the product but were reducing the rate at which they sold it so as to profiteer from the situation.
Meanwhile , the Department of Petroleum Resources said in a statement that it had come to its notice that some depot owners were selling PMS to unlicensed bulk buyers and some retailers at prices above the approved ex- depot prices, adding that some retail outlets were hoarding the product or selling at above the industry- set cap price.
The Zonal Operations Controller , Lagos , DPR, Mr . Wole Akinyosoye , said , “These actions are clear violations of the Petroleum Act, 1969 and extant regulations, and they exacerbate the current supply challenges by bringing unnecessary hardships on the consumers .”
He added that the agency had been punishing the errant operators and warned that penalties would be imposed on any operator engaging in illicit acts .
“ We are also assuring the public that the government is doing everything to ensure the restoration of normalcy to the sector,” he added.
In Owerri , the Imo State capital , a litre of petrol sold for N200 on Tuesday instead of the approved price of N145.
This is even as the prices of goods and services , especially transportation fares, have increased by between 80 per cent and 100 per cent .
Most residents of the city called on the Federal Government, through the DPR and the state’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources, to caution the independent petroleum marketers in the state.
A commercial driver in Owerri , who gave his name as Johnson Emmason , flayed the owners of filling stations in the state for what he called arbitrary increase in the pump price.
Meanwhile , the NNPC said on Tuesday that it had started releasing 470 trucks of PMS to Abuja and Lagos despite the persistent queues for the product by motorists at the few filling stations that dispensed it .
In Abuja and neighbouring states of Kaduna and Nasarawa , the queues for petrol persisted on Tuesday , as hundreds of motorists struggled to get the product.

BREAKDOWN: FULL TIME: Man United 1, Man City 2 @ Old Trafford

FULL TIME: Man United 1, Man City 2 @ Old Trafford

FULL-TIME: Man United 1 Man City 2
90+4min – Silva shot saved
Bernardo Silva is played in by a long De Bruyne ball and has the chance to kill it. But the angle narrows and De Gea saved for a corner. City will see it out in the corner.
90+3: NO PENALTY! Silva breaks in a three on two and goes down under contact by Valencia. Nothing given.
CHANCE! Silva again gets away after a superb pass by De Bruyne. He’s only got De Gea to beat but the goalkeeper stands tall.
90+2: City have kept the ball brilliantly down by the corner flag. An example of how to run down the clock. United can’t get the ball.
90 mins
Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
City keeping it in the corner now, slowing play down and managing the game well.
Ashley Young is booked for lashing the shins of Raheem Sterling. Frustration.
88: SUB! Bernardo Silva replaces Sane. City winding down the clock now.
86 mins : GREAT SAVES!
Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
It’s not Romelu Lukaku’s day but that is superb from Ederson! Anthony Martial volleys a cross into the middle, Lukaku meets it from about six yards out, Ederson blocks it with face, and then somehow gets up to save Juan Mata’s follow-up.
The second save is outrageously good. Is that the win for City?
85 mins: WHAT A SAVE!! Mata chips a ball to Martial down the left. He fizzes a ball across the goal, where Lukaku is waiting but his close range effort is blocked away by Ederson’s face. Mata comes charging in for the rebound but Ederson is brave and somehow blocks the effort away. Superb stuff.
83mins: United gone for 4-4-2 for the final eight minutes. Direct stuff coming City’s way.
81mins: SUB! Herrera is replaced by Mata. All subs made now by Jose.
80min – Herrera booked for diving
United on the attack again and, after Lukaku is initially snuffed out, Ander Herrera goes down inside the box under challenge by Walker and is punished for diving as Old Trafford screams for penalty. It was a pretty flagrant attempt to be honest.
78mins: PENALTY APPEAL…NOT GIVEN! Lukaku wastes a good opportunity down the left and the crowd groan. City don’t clear and Herrera nips in front of Otamendi just inside the area. He hits the deck…but the referee is two yards away and spots the dive. Booking for Herrera and no penalty for United.
76: SUB! Here comes Zlatan. One last push for United. He replaces Lingard. All or nothing now for United
75 mins: SAVE! A long ball towards Delph causes him trouble and Rashford skips in behind him. It’s a tight angle but he connects well. Tipped wide by Ederson. The corner comes to nothing.
73min – Silva booked
David Silva has gone into the book for a late and rash challenge on his Spanish compatriot Ander Herrera. Referee Michael Oliver originally allowed play to continue but has now pulled it back. Silva continues to protest.
PICTURE: Lukaku misses the target

70min – De Bruyne shot saved
City breaking forward with lightning speed and incision again as Kevin de Bruyne glides through the middle of United’s defence and shoots from 20 yards. De Gea got down really well to turn away what was a ferociously hit shot.

70min – Rashford free-kick over
United with a decent set-piece chance here as Raheem Sterling fouls Marcus Rashford on a break forward. A free-kick 25 yards out that Rashford strikes but always rising over the bar. Wasted chance for United and they haven’t had many.
71mins: SAVE! Brilliant from City. De Bruyne links with Silva and sprints down the middle. He gets to about 20 yards out and fizzes a low strike towards the bottom corner…WHAT A SAVE! De Gea gets down quickly and flicks it around the post with one hand.
69 mins
Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
There’s a crispness to City’s attacks. Again they come down the left, freeing Leroy Sane and he as time and space. He picks out a man in the middle – no! Well cleared by Ashley Young.
68mins: Silva instigates another move with Sane down the left. The German gets to the by-line but his cross is cleared away again by Young.
67 mins
Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City
Shot, a shot from United and it’s a semi-decent opening too. Jesse Lingard slides a pass into the run of Romelu Lukaku, he has a lot of work to do and is stood up by Eli Mangala and can only slice wide into the Stretford End from 20+ yards. Could he have driven on into the area?
65min – Silva searching for another
City on the charge again as David Silva runs down the left into space. He drills across a low ball that was aimed at Gundogan but it eludes him and Ashley Young hacks it away.

63min – Rashford booked
Marcus Rashford is going to be booked here, much to the chagrin of the United fans. He tangled with Mangala and ran the ball over the touchline for a City throw. Rashford then reacted petulantly by bouncing the ball hard.
61min – How will United respond?
The hour mark passes and City are coming forward in search of a game-killing third. Leroy Sane is fouled and David Silva has the chance to swing in the free-kick.
This time it doesn’t come to anything. How can United respond here? They need something otherwise you feel the title race is done and dusted.
PICTURES: Otamendi restores City’s lead

58min – Jesus off
A change for City, who take off Gabriel Jesus and bring on Eliaquim Mangala.

57min – Lukaku makes unwanted impact
Well it’s fair to say Lukaku has caused chaos inside one penalty box this afternoon. Unfortunately it’s been his own box. Culpable for both City goals now with his botched clearances.
GOAL! Man United 1 Man City 2 (Nicolas Otamendi 54)

City have the lead again and fortune smiled on them there. A free-kick on the left was swung across by De Bruyne and Lukaku looked like he had a simple clearance. But his ball struck Ander Herrera on the back and fell perfectly to Nicolas Otamendi, who finished sweetly on the half-volley from close range. City back in front!
PICTURE: Lukaku gets away from Fernandinho

52min – United carrying more threat
Better from United who do manage to get a few passes together and get into City’s half. Martial plays the ball across from the left but it doesn’t quite reach Lingard in the centre. Two or three times United have found joy down that side in the early minutes of this half.

49min – United need to improve
United need a shake-up of their game plan in this second-half otherwise they’ll be overrun again by City. They need to string three or four passes together playing out from the back, for starters.
Lukaku is almost away down the left but Kyle Walker has the legs and gets back to stop the big Belgian.

A change for United as well
United have also made a change at the back with Victor Lindelof on for Marcos Rojo, who picked up that head injury before half-time.

SECOND-HALF: City get us started again
City have made a change at the break with Ilkay Gundogan replacing Vincent Kompany.

45: We are back. SUB! Gundogan is on. Kompany is off. Strange one. Will Fernandinho play centre-back? No news if Kompany is injured.

SUB! Also, Lindelof replaces Rojo.
You feel this is a huge 45 minutes for the title race. Who will land a decisive blow? City get the game going….
Actions have resumed for the second half… will there be a winner? all hands are crossed as the second 45 minutes is underway.

HALF-TIME: Man United 1-1 Man City
Will there be a winner in this Manchester derby? in the first 40 minutes wasn’t great. City were tippy, tappy and United couldn’t string two passes together. Then Silva scored and United woke up. Aided by some horrendous defending by Delph, they are level through Rashford. Two big team talks coming up. Will United keep the pressure on or decide to defend deep again? Surely they need to go for it! See you in 15.

GOAL! Manchester United 1 (Marcus Rashford 45+2min) Manchester City 1
They have been under the cosh for the whole of the half but United have managed to find an equaliser in stoppage time. It has been rather gifted to them, however, as first Otamendi and then Delph make mistakes, allowing Rashford in behind to slot the ball past Ederson. We’re all square!

45+1min – United pressure at last
A few belated signs of life by United since that goal. First they win a corner, with Smalling’s attempted shot charged down, then Anthony Martial cuts in off the left flank and shoots low and hard. Ederson is able to get down and save.

45min – Four minutes added
GOAL! Manchester United 0 Manchester City 1 (David Silva 43)
It has been a first-half of complete City dominance and now they finally have their reward. David Silva is the man who gets it, turning the ball home from just a few yards out after United fail to deal with a City corner. The ball came off Lukaku as he tried to clear it but I’m sure he won’t want the assist.

GOAL! Manchester United 0 Manchester City 1 (David Silva 43)
43min – De Gea saves from Sane
Top save by David de Gea – the first tough save he’s made. A great ball across by Fabian Delph from the left, Ashley Young can’t climb high enough, and it comes to Sane. His shot on the angle is rising but De Gea reacts well and touch it over.

41min – City still well on top
United can’t get on the ball for more than a couple of passes at the moment as City prepare for another assault before half-time. Matic and Smalling combine to cut off a supply line to Jesus inside the box.
37min – Rojo patched up
Rojo needs a change of shirt but looks fit enough to continue after being patched up. A bit of blood on the side of his head following that clash with Silva.

35min – Rojo into the book
Sterling not happy as he has an angry word into Marcos Rojo’s ear after attempting to weave his way into the box. City trying to score the perfect goal again there instead of shooting.
Meanwhile, Rojo charges into the back of David Silva in the centre circle and he’ll receive a yellow card and correctly so. Worse still, he needs treatment for a head injury.
That might be Rojo’s last involvement as well with Victor Lindelof now getting prepared.
It prompts Pep Guardiola to walk up and say something to Jose Mourinho, who has a wry smile on his face.

32min – Jesus closed down
Fernandinho has played quite a few nice cross-field balls in this opening half-hour and he picks out Gabriel Jesus inside the box with his latest one. The Brazilian is blocked out by Marcos Rojo.
United break down the right and Jesse Lingard is penalised for what looked like a shoulder barge on Otamendi in the corner.

30min – Ederson does well
Ederson hasn’t been too engaged so far but he does well to control and clear a sharp Kyle Walker back pass after the City right-back came under pressure from Lingard. United almost in. Almost.

PICTURE: Guardiola gestures as Mourinho shows his skills
27min – Lingard working hard
United get the ball far enough forward to get into City’s defensive third as Jesse Lingard chases down a lost cause. Approaching the half-hour mark and United clinging on.

PICTURE: Gabriel Jesus rues a missed chance
23min – Kompany in on Herrera
A nasty challenge by Vincent Kompany on Ander Herrera. Well, that’s the opinion of the home fans anyway but he did win the ball. Still a moment or two for United to catch breath.

City looking increasingly dangerous
Chris Wheeler: ‘Park the bus, park the bus, Man United’ sing the City fans, and Jose Mourinho’s team are certainly being forced to defend in depth so far, whether by design or necessity. City are looking increasingly dangerous in front of David De Gea’s goal here. On the other hand, the only thing Ederson might end up catching is a cold.

21min – More City attacks
Everything going City’s way at the moment as Gabriel Jesus, who has moved out onto the left, runs at Antonio Valencia and is snuffed out just in the nick of time by Matic.
Then Sterling has a burst, then David Silva has the chance to shoot. It loops up into the arms of De Gea.
The away fans doing ‘Oles’ with every pass as Jesus goes down in the box. No penalty.

United forced too far back
Jack Gaughan: Not sure United’s midfield two have got to grips with this game properly yet. Both seem scared of engaging with the ball for fear of losing runners in behind. That’s forcing United back deeper than even Mourinho would be comfortable with.

PICTURE: Martial tackled by Otamendi

17min – Sterling shot saved
Nice City movement again, led by Raheem Sterling through the middle. He trades passes with Gabriel Jesus and, under pressure from Chris Smalling, the City man’s shot is under hit and easy for De Gea.
United hoofing their clearances forward quite a lot, the travelling fans taking great pressure in shouting ‘hoof’ each time. They’re also singing ‘park the bus, park the bus Man United!’

15min – City come forward again
City swing across a free-kick after Walker was fouled by Matic on the right. Antonio Valencia doesn’t get a call from De Gea and makes the clearance for a corner when it wasn’t necessary.
Sane’s corner is very nearly turned into his own net by Matic, who thankfully scuffed an attempted clearance at the near post and De Gea collects.

13min – Fernandinho shot blocked
City have enjoyed 77 per cent possession so far as they again pass it around on the edge of United’s box. Sane rolls a pass back to Fernandinho, who aims for goal but it’s blocked.
United need to move the ball quicker on the counter, though they did have a moment when Lukaku was almost released a few minutes ago.

PICTURE: Zlatan and Aguero joke around
 10min – United under pressure
United already having to sit in soak up City pressure. Leroy Sane has switched over to the right side and Raheem Sterling is playing in the middle. Sterling tries to thread a pass into Gabriel Jesus but the forward can’t quite control it and United clear.

8min – Lukaku foul
Romelu Lukaku penalised for a shove from behind on Nicolas Otamendi. ‘You’re joking’ screams the Belgian as United’s counter is brought to a premature end.

4min – Walker into the book
The first man into the book is City’s Kyle Walker – retrospectively – for a very late challenge on Ander Herrera as United broke away. Marcus Rashford carries the ball down the United left, thinks he’s won a corner but finds it’s a goal kick.

2min – Lingard given a ticking off
High-octane start at Old Trafford with both teams getting some early time on the ball. Michael Oliver has a word with Jesse Lingard after a late challenge on Leroy Sane down by the touchline.
