LAUTECH Governing Council approves increment in tuition fees

The Governing Council of Ladoke Akinola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has approved the increment in tuition fees of students of the university from 100 Level to 400 Level.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Council, J. A Agboola, and made available to ROYALPIZZLE_MEDIA HUB via the Union of Campus Journalists, LAUTECH, on Friday.
According to the release, the decision was reached at the 133rd governing council meeting which held on Thursday, July 5. The council decided that the hike will take effect from the 2018 / 2019 academic session.
Medical, Nursing and Biomedical students have been billed to start paying N300,000, Engineering student billed for N250,000 and students of the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Applied Sciences will pay N200,000. The new fee is against the N63,500 for indigenes and N72,500 for non-indigenes returning students.
The present 100 level students paid N120,000 for indigenes and N150,000 for non-indigenes as part of the resolution of the institution after the university strike that lasted for months.
When contacted by ROYALPIZZLE_MEDIA HUB,  the Public Relations Officer of the university, Lekan Fadeyi, did not deny nor affirm the approval of new fee payment. Rather, he told our reporter to reach out to the council.
. Meanwhile, a top official of the university, who spoke under condition of anonymity, told our correspondent in a telephone interview he has been earlier briefed about the decision of the council. “I also saw the release this morning. Although, the VC earlier said the issue was raised at the governing council meeting”, he said.
Meanwhile, several reactions have followed the development from students as they tagged the decision of the university as an “illicit act”.“The truth is that more than 70 per cent of the students can’t afford it and the other 30 per cent will struggle to pay it. The ones, whose parents are staff of the institution aren’t left out either,” a female student who asked not to be mentioned because of fear of victimisation said.Another student, Kazeem Alli, told PREMIUM TIMES that the university “is calling for another strike”.“The university is only calling for crises again because students will protest this inhumane policy. We’ve heard about this earlier and we are ready to combat it,” he said.

Unpaid salaries responsible for Fayemi’s victory, says NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress has attributed the election of Kayode Fayemi as Ekiti State Governor to the failure of the outgoing administration in the state to pay workers’ salaries and benefits. The congress therefore admonished the incoming administration to settle workers salaries and pension immediately it was sworn in.
The NLC President , Ayuba Wabba , in a congratulatory message to Fayemi in Abuja on Saturday , stated that Fayemi ’s election was a reflection of the popular wishes of the people and their appreciation of the work he started when he was governor of the state .Wabba counseled the new governor against vilifying or going after his predecessor , adding that he should rather complete the work he started in his first tenure. The NLC boss stated that Fayemi should use the opportunity of his second coming to render higher and greater service to the people of Ekiti State “ who have kept faith with you in spite of everything .”He said , “Few , if any, suffered the level of government- engineered vilification and witch - hunt aimed at frustrating your bid for a second term in office. That you won this election in spite of these obstacles or frustration should be a source of joy and pride to you and your esteemed supporters .“ We believe that the non- payment of workers salary and pension by the outgoing government was enough reason for the vote of no confidence by the people.
“ We are confident that one of your first executive actions upon your inauguration would be to clear the backlog of salaries and pension owed Ekiti workers .”The congress President said the people would hold the new governor to his promises , adding that the NLC would not do any differently .

Photos: President Emmanuel Macron, Ambode at the Shrine

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Lagos on Tuesday evening to the Shrine, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti’s music venue, to celebrate Nigerian and African culture.
“I’m very happy to be here with you tonight,” said Macron, addressing the cheering and whistling crowd in English.
Macron went directly to the Shrine from Nigeria’s capital of Abuja, where he met with President Muhammadu Buhari on the second day of his visit to West Africa after Mauritania on Monday.
The French president said he was happy to return to Nigeria, where he had done an internship at the French embassy in 2002 and had visited the Shrine.
Describing the concert hall as “iconic”, Macron said that “we have to build a new common narrative” in Africa.
“You have to recognise the bad and negative pages of this history, but you have to move forward,” he said to applause.
Macron, who had taken off his jacket and tie, was at the Shrine to announce the launch of the African Cultural Season which takes place in France in 2020, showcasing music, fashion, cinema and theatre.
The choice of venue surprised some Nigerians, who associate the Shrine with the anti-establishment musician.
